This is the only novel I have read three times. The first time was when I was sitting in a pub, awaiting a train after visiting my mum in hospital. The book was good company: a rainy seaside town in England, with an American here to sing for a season in a little local theatre. I was taken by the troubled hero and the townsfolk who came on and off the page in his adventure. I heard a piano in the background as he tried to do the right thing and stay in key.
