Every library needs a few reference books, especially one about that most important topic: food. This portable version of the massive Oxford Companion makes me smile and answers my questions in equal measure. I can hear the voice of my friend and mentor, Alan Davidson, on every page, reminding me of his sense of fun as well as his brilliance. I hope you find something in it that makes you laugh and speaks to your heart the way his piece on ‘washing up’ speaks to mine.
